The Benefits of Sensory Play

What is sensory play?

The purpose of sensory play is to provide a space for exploration and development of the mind. Sensory play are activities that engage all five of the senses. The five senses are sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell. Engaging all five senses helps children learn and grow through building neuro connections. Through sensory play, children develop language skills, fine motor skills, and cognitive skills. It can also build vocabulary, problem solving, and logical thinking.

Sensory play also aids in creating a sense of self-awareness (proprioception) and balance (vestibular sense). These are all things that little bodies need to develop to experience the world around them.

Sensory play opens up a child’s imagination. It can also be a great way to promote independent play and emotional regulation.

It can also be a great screen free activity.

Unlimited screen time can have negative effects on a child’s growth and development.

Per Mayo Clinic, excessive screen time can be linked to obesity, irregular sleep, behavioral problems, impaired academic performance, etc.

Screens are, of course, part of our world and can provide many benefits. However, screens should be incorporated into a child’s life with healthy boundaries in place. Trust me, the kiddos love their screen time, but most days, we have a daily limit.

Love,

Mandy
